PARSONS DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN KEY WORDS: MULTGRID; FINITE ELEMENT; TWO-PHASE FLOW; POROUS MEDIA. ABSTRACT. IN THIS WORK, THE FLOW OF TWO IMISCIBLE FLUIDS IN POROUS MEDIA IS STUDIED, INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF GRAVITY, CAPILARY PRESSURE AND COMPRESSIBILITY. THE RESULTING SET OF EQUATIONS IS APPROXIMATED USING THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD. FOR THE EQUATION CORRESPONDING TO THE SATURATION, THE PETROV-GALERKIN METHOD IS USED, AUGMENTED WITH A SHOCK CAPTURING OPERATOR. IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE PRESSURE GRADIENTS (WHICH GOVERN THE COMPUTATION OF THE VELOCITY TERMS) A SPECIFIC POST-PROCESSING TECHNIQUE WAS USED. THE SEMI-DISCRETE SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS IN PRESSURE, VELOCITY AND SATURATION IS RESOLVED BY A BLOCK ITERATIVE PREDICTOR MULTI-CORRECTOR SCHEME. IN THE INCOMPRESSIBLE CASE, THE LINEAR SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS CORRESPONDING TO THE PRESSURE EQUATION IS SOLVED USING THE MULTGRID METHOD. NUMERICAL EXAMPLES ILUSTRATE THE EFICIENCY OF THE APPROACH FOR THE SOLUTION OF INCOMPRESSIBLE AND SLIGHTLY COMPRESSIBLE FLOWS INCLUDING THE EFFECT OF GRAVITY.
