ABSTRACT. IN THE CURRENT PRODUCTION SYSTEMS, THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE GROUP TECHNOLOGY (GT) STILL PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART, EVEN THOUGH NEW PRODUCTION MODELS HAVE RECEIVED MORE ATTENTION. THEREFORE, THE PROBLEM OF CELL FORMATION OF MANUFACTURING, ONE OF THE DIRECT APPLICATIONS OF GT, STILL RAISES THE INTEREST OF MANY RESEARCHERS, AS IT IS A PROBLEM OF GREAT PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS AND MAINTENANCE OF A CELLULAR MANUFACTURING SYSTEM AND IT ALSO FORMS A COMPLEX SOLUTION, BECAUSE IT DEPENDS ON THE ANALYSIS OF CONSTRAINTS OF VARIED ORIGINS, IN GENERAL RELATED TO THE PRODUCTION TYPE. THIS IS ONE OF THE POINTS OF MOTIVATION FOR CONTINUING RESEARCH IN THAT LINE. A TOOL THAT HAS BEEN PROVIDING GREAT PROGRESS IN THE ANALYSIS OF THAT PROBLEM IS THE GENETIC ALGORITHM. HOWEVER, THE GOOD ACTING OF THE GENETIC ALGORITHM DEPENDS ON THE APPROPRIATE CHOICE OF SOME PARAMETERS AND FUNCTIONS. IN THIS PAPER, WE PRESENT A REVIEW OF THE FORMS OF REPRESENTATION (DEFINITION OF THE CHROMOSOME) AND EVALUATION OF THE PROBLEM OF CELL FORMATION FOR MANUFACTURING.
