METHODOLOGY FOR INVESTIGATION OF COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY IN TROPICAL RAINFOREST CLEARING FIRES
 
Summary :
THIS WORK INVESTIGATES COMBUSTION OF BIOMASS IN FOREST CLEARING FIRES. INSTEAD OF NATURAL FIRES, FOREST CLEARING FIRES ARE MADE BY MAN TO TRANSFORM NATURAL FORESTS IN PASTURES AND PLANTING AREAS. THE MAIN GOAL OF THE STUDY WAS TO VERIFY INFLUENCE OF TRUNK CHARACTERISTICS AND WIND IN THE BURNING EFFICIENCY. THIS MATTER WAS OBSERVED IN TWO WAYS: IN A MICRO-BURNING TEST AND IN A REAL SIZE TEST. THE MICRO-BURNING TEST WAS PERFORMED IN A WIND TUNNEL, DESIGNED AND BUILT AT INPE S INSTALLATION, IN CACHOEIRA PAULISTA. BY MEANS OF TESTS PERFORMED WITH DIFFERENT WIND VELOCITIES WITH THE SAME KIND OF BIOMASS, AT THE SAME NATURAL DRYING CONDITIONS AND AVERAGE SIZE, DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BURNING RATES AND EFFICIENCIES WERE STUDIED. FURTHERMORE, SOME PARTICULAR ASPECTS OF BURNING WERE OBSERVED IN A REAL SIZE TEST, PERFORMED AT CAIABI FARM, ALTA FLORESTA, MT, LOCATED AT THE DEFORESTATION AND BURNING BOUNDARY IN THE AMAZON REGION. THE MAIN GOAL THERE WAS TO OBSERVE INFLUENCE OF TRUNK GEOMETRY IN THE BURNING EFFICIENCY.
