SIMULATION OF EVAPORATIVE HEAT EXCHANGERS
 
Summary :
EVAPORATIVE HEAT EXCHANGERS HAVE FOUND APPLICATIONS IN A GREAT NUMBER OF INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES, SPECIALLY IN WATER COOLING AND VAPORS CONDENSATION. THE HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER MECHANISM AT THE AIR WATER INTERFACE IS A FAIRLY WELL KNOWN PSYCHROMETRIC PROCESS. ON THE OTHER HAND THE COMPLEX GEOMETRY OF THIS INTERFACE MAKES THE PROBLEM A RATHER INTRACTABLE ONE. PRESENT STUDY DEALS WITH A SIMULATION MODEL OF EVAPORATIVE WATER COOLERS AND CONDENSERS FOR REFRIGERATION APPLICATIONS. IT IS BASED UPON EVALUATIONS OF THE ENERGY AND MASS TRANSFER MECHANISMS INVOLVING TWO REGIONS: THE ONE FROM BULK AIR TO THE AIR-WATER INTERFACE AND THE ONE FROM WATER SURFACE TO THE INTERNAL FLUID (PROCESS FLUID). EXHAUSTIVE ANALYSIS HAS BEEN PERFORMED OF SEVERAL CORRELATIONS FROM THE LITERATURE FOR THE HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER PROCESSES INVOLVED IN EVAPORATIVE COOLERS. RESULTS FROM THE MODEL HAVE BEEN COMPARED TO THOSE FROM MANUFACTURERS CATALOGUES WITH AN EXPRESSIVE DEGREE OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN THEM.
