 Title:
USING A PLASMA ARC WELDING KEYHOLE TECHNIQUE FOR THE ROOT PASS OF A SINGLE-V-GROOVE PREPARATION

Summary :
THOUGH BEING CONSIDERED AS A HIGH PRODUCTIVITY FABRICATION PROCESS, PLASMA ARC WELDING (PAW) IS STILL USED IN A SMALL SCALE IN THE INDUSTRY. THE MAIN OBSTACLES FOR THE PROCESS IMPLANTATION ARE SHORTAGE OF TECHNICAL INFORMATION AND WELDING OPERATIONAL DIFFICULTIES, WHICH ARE EVEN MORE CRITICAL WHEN WELDING JOINT ROOTS WITH A SINGLE-V-GROOVE PREPARATION. THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PARAMETER TOLERANCE BOX FOR THIS PROCESS REGARDING CARBON STEEL, USING A KEYHOLE TECHNIQUE. THE PARAMETER TOLERANCE BOX INCLUDES WELDING CURRENT, TRAVEL SPEED, AND PLASMA GAS FLOW. IT WAS VERIFIED A NARROW OPERATIONAL RANGE FOR THE PARAMETER TOLERANCE BOX. THE WELD BEAD GEOMETRY REPEATABILITY HAS NOT BEEN REACHED FOR A FOUND PARAMETER TOLERANCE BOX. IT WAS VERIFIED THAT THE SHIELDING GAS IS RELATED TO THE KEYHOLE STABILITY AND MAYBE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WELD BEAD GEOMETRY NON REPEATABILITY INTO THE PARAMETER TOLERANCE BOX. KEY-WORDS: PAW, KEYHOLE, PARAMETER TOLERANCE BOX, ROOT BEAD
