Subject: Creation of fluid mechanics prize and of solid mechanics prize

Dear Colleagues,

This message serves to inform you that recently the IUTAM Bureau and the Executive Committee of the Congress Committee have agreed with the creation of independent prizes in fluid mechanics and in solid mechanics, to be named the Batchelor Prize in Fluid Mechanics and the Rodney Hill Prize in Solid Mechanics.

The prizes are to be of value $25,000 (twenty-five thousand US Dollars) each, and they are to be awarded every four years at the International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM).

The Batchelor Prize in Fluid Mechanics is to be sponsored by Cambridge University Press (and in particular by their Journal of Fluid Mechanics) for 20 years in first instance, whereas the Rodney Hill Prize in Solid Mechanics is to be sponsored by Elsevier for 10 years in first instance. Both prizes will be awarded for the first time at ICTAM-2008 in Adelaide.
