    1 Postdoc/Assistant Professorship and 1 PhD position in Nonlinear Dynamics and Mechanical Vibrations

    The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark are looking for one talented candidate for a position as PhD student and one talented postdoc/assistant professorship candidate to participate in the research project:

    `Equation-free analysis of mechanical vibrations’.

    For position as Postdoc/Assistant professor
    In exceptional cases, the position as postdoc can be appointed also as assistant professor.

    Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering, mathematics or a similar degree and academic qualifications equivalent to the PhD level.

    The salary and appointment terms are negotiated in accordance with the current collective agreement for Danish University faculty members.

    For position as PhD student
    Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering, mathematics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

    The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 45 25 11 76 or +45 45 25 11 77.

    The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

    For all positions
    The positions are available for a period of three years, starting April 1st, 2009 or earliest thereafter, and is funded through a grant from The Danish Research Council for Technology and Production Sciences.

    The candidates will be parts of dynamic research environments at the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which are internationally recognized for their activities and host leading experts within several research areas. The candidates are expected to work result-oriented in producing ground-breaking research in a new area, both independently and in collaboration with national and international partners in academia and industry.

    This project aims towards the development of new mathematical and experimental techniques to systematically investigate the dependence of vibrations on model parameters (e.g. bearing or material coefficients). To achieve this, equation-free techniques (also called coarse analysis) will be used. This makes it possible to obtain an understanding of the dynamic behaviour on a macroscopic scale by disregarding large amounts of unimportant information on the microscopic scale. The method fills the gap between time simulations of complex numerical models, such as nonlinear finite element models (FEM), and stability and bifurcation analyses with much simpler analytical models. The reason is that it enables such informative analyses directly on the complex microscopic models without the (often approximative) derivation of equations of motion on a macroscopic level. Due to the high-dimensional variable and parameter spaces and resulting computational costs, it is not possible to obtain similar information by direct simulations. The scientific goal is to clarify the potential of this approach within an important area of mechanics, rotating machinery (e.g. a turbocharger), where the detailed understanding of time dependent complex models play important roles in the design process.

    Applicants should have experience either in applied mathematics/theoretical methods or in mechanical engineering.

    One position will be hosted at the Department of Mathematics, the candidate for this position must document capabilities to perform research in at least two of the following areas:

    • nonlinear dynamics
    • continuation methods
    • (numerical) bifurcation analysis
    • vibration analysis
    • finite element modeling

    One position will be hosted at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the candidate for this position must document capabilities to perform research in at least two of the following areas:

    • vibration analysis
    • theoretical rotor dynamics
    • experimental rotor dynamics
    • finite element modeling
