Abstract
Mechanical testing for fracture behavior characterization can benefit from using non-invasive measurement techniques that assess displacement fields near the crack tip and enable the integration with numerical models. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an optical technique that meets these requirements. Its accuracy is associated with minimizing the correlation residual between an image of the deformed configuration and a reference image. This article proposes an adaptive mesh refinement strategy based on the strain field to optimize DIC performance. The methodology is applied to a three-point bending test using an alumina specimen. The results include generating adaptive meshes and analyzing the correlation error reduction associated with the proposed method. The influence of the refinement factor on the final mesh is also evaluated. The global grayscale residual was reduced by 4.7\% compared to a uniform mesh.
