Abstract
The Hindmarsh-Rose model, composed of a third-order system of ordinary differential equations, is widely used to model the dynamic behavior of biological neurons, reproducing regular, irregular, and chaotic firing patterns. In particular, chaotic and hyperchaotic dynamics modeled by this system are associated with pathological conditions such as epilepsy. In this context, the present work proposes a comparative analysis between two nonlinear control techniques — Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) control — aiming to suppress chaotic oscillations in the Hindmarsh-Rose model and drive the system dynamics toward stable periodic orbits. The LQR strategy, based on the linearization of the system around an equilibrium point, is evaluated against the SDRE method, which preserves the model’s nonlinearity by solving Riccati equations parameterized by the system’s state. The effectiveness of both controllers is assessed through numerical simulations, taking into account both transient behavior and robustness to parametric uncertainties. The results show that both methods are capable of stabilizing the dynamics of the electronic neuron; however, the SDRE control exhibits superior performance in terms of trajectory accuracy and adaptation to system variations. These findings highlight the potential of nonlinear optimal control as a promising tool for the development of biomimetic devices aimed at treating neurological disorders such as epilepsy.
