Abstract
This study investigates the influence of operational parameters on the formation of aluminum coatings applied to SAE 1020 steel, a low-carbon metallic alloy, using the electric arc thermal spray process. The research focuses on the analysis of the microstructural and mechanical properties of the coatings, aiming to optimize functional performance. Different deposition patterns were evaluated by varying the travel speed, the standoff distance, and the spraying path pattern. The samples were characterized through morphological analysis, Vickers microhardness testing, visual inspection after bending, as well as thickness measurements and porosity evaluation. Samples sprayed with a 180° pattern, particularly those produced with multiple passes, exhibited lower porosity, better uniformity, and superior mechanical integrity, in accordance with Petrobras standard N-2568. It is concluded that the proper selection of process parameters is essential for achieving high-quality metallic coatings with satisfactory performance in industrial applications.
