Abstract
This study investigates the estimation of damage and fatigue life in structures subjected to random stresses, comparing methods in both the time and frequency domains. To this end, two stress histories were analyzed: an artificially generated bimodal signal and an experimentally obtained signal. In the frequency domain, the Dirlik, Jiao-Moan, and Ortiz-Chen methods, among others, are compared. In the time domain, the classical decomposition of the stress time series into cycles of equal amplitude and mean is applied using the “rainflow” technique. Miner’s linear damage accumulation rule is used in both methodologies. The results show that different methodologies provide estimates closer to the traditional method (rainflow-Miner) depending on the characteristics of the signal.
