Abstract
Mechanical elements subject to torsion are common in engineering projects. Designing these elements requires knowledge of the material properties, which is obtained through mechanical tests. The aim of this work is to design an educational bench for studying shafts with circular cross-sections subjected to torsion, which is lightweight, cost-effective, and aids in the development of Mechanics of Materials classes. To achieve this, existing benches were studied to understand their operational principles and identify the main components and adjustments used. Subsequently, the initial design of a viable bench for manufacturing and testing was conceived. This prototype allows for the analysis of a test specimen considering variations in length, diameter, and material. A finite element analysis of the bench structure was conducted to identify possible critical points of the structure. The proposed prototype is a robust structure resistant to the forces generated during mechanical tests, with no risk of failure. Numerical results suggest that this version should be optimized to reduce weight and, consequently, the final cost. This prototype is easy to construct, meets the described project requirements, and is easy to handle.
