Abstract
The aim of this work is to evaluate a Vickers microhardness measurement methodology with a load of 5 grams-force (gf) for metallic materials with extremely small grains. The material used in this study was a sample of GTAW welded joints in a hyperduplex steel. The sample was indented with the specified load of 5gf. After the sample was indented on the microhardness tester, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were used to characterize and record the indentations. Images taken by optical microscopy (OM) were also acquired for comparison with the quality of the SEM images. The ImageJ software was used to measure the diagonals of the indentation. It was observed that the precision in performing the measurements using SEM images is better than those made directly on the equipment.
