Abstract
The following bibliographical review aims to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of distributed manufacturing of polymeric materials compared to large-scale (or centralized) production in an attempt to curb the increase of plastics in landfills. To this end, research related to plastics recycling was reviewed in an attempt to analyze the feasibility of the project. In summary, distributed polymer manufacturing via 3D printing is capable of producing complex parts with a wide range of custom applications, quantities, and types of items, which is generally not feasible for the centralized production method. Some of the notable disadvantages of this method are: the partial loss of mechanical properties after recycling (there are studies that try to reverse this fact) and longer time to produce items. Changing the purpose of the product is also considered in order to ensure recycling. Studies confirm a greater environmental viability (lower CO2 emissions and amount of energy consumed) of distributed manufacturing versus centralized production for certain products with certain production characteristics. Such a method is remarkably beneficial to the environment and it is expected that with technological improvements in 3D printing, such a method will become more and more widespread.
