Abstract
In this work, the use of individual and series cyclones for separating particles and increasing the gases residence time in thermochemical reactors was studied. Such reactors are used in the thermodegradation of biomass and production of fuel, called synthesis gas, which consists of a multiphase mixture, presenting solid particles in the middle of the gas. Such particles need to be removed to improve fuel quality. Therefore, the use of separator cyclones individually or in series was studied, which perform a filtering process increasing the residence time of the gas inside the reactor. Numerical studies were carried out through the simulation of this system in ANSYS® Fluent, considering the SST k-omega SST turbulence models, the laws of conservation of mass, heat and energy. The results were evaluated by analyzing pressure drop, velocity curves and filtered particle rate. Isolated, the axial cyclone presented better performance, retaining a larger number of particles. Together, the use of the axial cyclone combined with the radial cyclones, meant that the larger particles were mostly retained in the axial cyclone, while the smaller particles were completely removed by the radial cyclones in series
