Abstract
The use of residual biomass for the production of biofuels has been in vogue in recent years, due to the global need to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and guarantee energy security in the coming years. The objective of this work is to verify if the mechanical durability of pine wood pellets meets the quality standards of the ISO 17225-2 standard, and if changes in the conditions of durability tests in a rotating device, standardized by DS/EN 15210-1, are feasible. The work applies the dimensional analysis methodology (Buckngham's PI's Theorem) to the test parameters of the aforementioned technical standard, thus obtaining a set of 5 dimensionless numbers that address geometric, kinematic and dynamic similarity. The explored results seek to keep constant some dimensionless numbers, however changing the parameters of mechanical durability tests. Analyzed results for π1, π4 and π4’ indicated numerical variation within the range of standard interferences. This allows us to state that they are equivalent results, that is, with similarity in geometric, kinematic and dynamic aspects. Therefore, it is possible to carry out tests using less time or less mass or less geometry, and obtain consistent results based on the dimensional analysis methodology.
