Abstract
Oil well drill string are slender structures subjected to different dynamic actions in their operation. The objective of this work it to model the torsional dynamics of a drill string, considering the action of a rotary engine at the top of the column and dry-friction between the drill bit and the soil. In this way, the top of the column has a constant speed imposed by the motor and the base is subjected to a torque due to the presence of dry-friction. Because of this friction, the resulting movement of the column can be characterized by two qualitatively different modes, stick and slip modes, with an abrupt transition. The column dynamics was mathematically modeled using axis theory and the column was discretized using the finite elements method. Matlab programs were developed for numerical simulations. Different friction models were used to analyze their influence on the dynamics of the system
