Abstract
Mass movements constitute risks and warnings regarding the discussion of natural catastrophes, especially in Brasil. Vulnerable regions can be violently hit by mud and debris flows, for example, and when human lives are at the heart of this problem the search for preventive solutions is inevitable. Since the flow of muddy material drags solid material and sediments, it is essential to know the relationship between the flow and submerged solid bodies. Thus, this work comprises the numerical study of a free surface flow of a viscoplastic fluid over an inclined plane. The flow is governed by gravitational acceleration and flows over a submerged fixed solid body. The computational simulation is performed in OpenFOAM free software using the VOF (volume of fluid) model to configure the two-dimensional free-surface flow of a Herschel-Bulkley fluid. The fluid and flow configurations are kept constant while the dimensions of the solid body are varied. Therefore, this work initially evaluates the dynamic of the incident flow over a solid body by studying the velocity and pressure fields. Then, it studies the magnitude forces acting on the solid body as a function of its characteristic dimensions. Approximation functions are added to the obtained data with the objective of predicting the impositions brought to the obstacle by the flow and predicting the carrying capacity of the flow.
