Abstract
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a semi-crystalline polymer commonly used in applications when high working temperatures (up to 260 °C) and chemical stability are needed. To form PTFE parts, polymer granules are cold-pressed and sintered. During the sintering process, the low thermal conductivity of PTFE generates temperature gradients in the parts and consequently internal stresses that may damage the part. Developing simulation tools should permit to reduce the risk of damage and optimize the sintering step. For an accurate modeling of the process, thermomechanical properties of the material must be known. In this study, a (visco)elastic property of pure PTFE compacts has been characterized at different temperatures using the compression tests. Specimens were obtained by isostatic pressing and tested in a universal testing machine equipped with an oven. The oven and windows enabled the execution of Digital Image Correlation and provided the displacement fields in the specimen. Young’s Modulus of PTFE at different temperatures from room temperature to 375 °C are reported.
