Abstract
Rolling processes are widely used to manufacture metallic plates, bars and some other profiles. These processes are well known for their high productivity, good dimensional and microstructure control of the processed metals. This work investigates the use of asymmetric accumulative rolling to obtain multilayered laminates of Steel and Al. Asymmetric rolling incorporates an additional shear component which is expected to benefit the joining between the layers and improve the microstructure refinement. Steel-Al laminates have great potential for application as over-head long distance electrical conductors due to the combination of high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. Steel-Al samples were manufactured by stacking Al plates between two Steel plates in order to obtain a sandwich like structure. This sandwich like stacks with Al in the middle were processed by two passes of accumulative asymmetric rolling and its thermal stability at 450oC was assessed. The obtained samples were characterized by Vickers microhardness and the microstructure was observed via optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was observed a gradient microhardness and microstructure, with more refined grains and higher hardness values at regions neighbouring the internal interfaces. The post-deformation annealing at 450oC did not cause significant decrease in hardness for both Al and Steel. An intermetallic layers, identified as Al5Fe2, was formed after the annealing and its size is directly proportional to the annealing time.
