Abstract
Drilling is one of the preliminary stages in several machining operations, being carried out on virtually any finished product. The application of stainless steel is increasing in the manufacture of various consumer goods, from sophisticated mechanical parts to domestic appliances, with AISI 316 stainless steel being one of the most used. The need to reduce manufacturing costs and increase productivity in industries makes it very important to know the performance of standard tools in mechanical machining processes as the twist drills, especially carbide tools and coated tools using coatings with favourable characteristics. This work analysed the main tools faults presented by carbide twist drills in the drilling of 316 stainless steel plates. 950 holes were made with 15 intermediate observations considering the appearing and progress of the main tools faults. It was possible to notice that the adhesion of material accompanied by the appearing of built-up edge and subsequent chipping was the main problem encountered. The tools faults monitored at the two edges did not present similar behavior and one of the main regions most affected was that near the transverse edge.
