ABSTRACT. ROTARY MACHINES OPERATION CONDITION MONITORING IS A INDISPENSABLE ACTION TO DETECT THEIR FAULTS. THE HIGH FREQUENCY BAND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN EFFICIENTLY USED TO DETECT INCIPIENT FAULTS OF ROLLER BEARINGS, BY USING THE ENVELOPS OF IT S VIBRATION SIGNAL. TO IMPROVE THE FAULT INDENTIFICATION IT IS NECESSARY TO CHOOSE WICH FREQUENCY IS MORE SENSITIVE TO THE BEARING DEFECTS. THIS PAPER PROPOSES THE USE OF THE MECHANICAL SYSTEM S FREQUENCY RESPONSE FUNCTION TO SELECT THE MOST SENSITIVE FREQUENCY BANDS. EXPERIMENTAL TESTS ARE CONDUCTED USING A RIGID BALL BEARING WITH A DEFECT INTRODUCED ON IT S OUTER RACE. THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN SLELECTED FREQUENCY BANDS ARE COMPARED, TO IDENTIFY THE IMPULSES GENERATED BY THE BEARING FAULTS.
