THIS PAPER PRESENTS A SOLUTION BASED ON GENETIC ALGORITHM AND PROBABILISTIC SAFETY ANALYSIS THAT CAN BE APPLIED IN THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE POLITIC OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT SAFETY SYSTEMS. THE GOAL OF THIS APPROACH IS TO IMPROVE THE AVERAGE AVAILABILITY OF THE SYSTEM THROUGH THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULING POLITIC. THE AUXILIARY FEED WATER SYSTEM OF A TWO LOOPS PRESSURIZED WATER REACTOR IS USED AS A SAMPLE CASE, IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROPOSED METHOD. THE RESULTS, WHEN COMPARED TO THOSE OBTAINED BY SOME STANDARD MAINTENANCE POLITICS, REVEAL QUANTITATIVE GAINS AT OPERATIONAL SAFETY LEVELS.
