ABSTRACT. THIS RESEACH WORK PRESENTS TWO ALGORITHMS FOR CUTTING TOOL CHOICE, DEVELOPED FOR NUMERICAL CONTROL(NC) SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS IN MILLING MACHINING MACROS. THE ALGORITHMS DEFINE THE BEST CUTTING TOOLS IN ORDER TO OPTIMIZE A MILLING OPERATION OF A FLAT SURFACE, DEFINED BY A CONVEX POLYGON. THE SURFACE CAN BE DEFINED BY THE POLIGON VERTICES OR BY THE MATHEMATICAL EQUATIONS OF THE STRAIGHT LINE SEGMENTS THAT CONSTITUTE THE SIDES OF THE FLAT SURFACE. THE PSURF3 ALGORITHM UTILIZES THE CIRCUNCENTRE CONCEPT, AND THE LONGEST DISTANCES BETWEEN THE SURFACE VERTICES, TO CHOOSE THE MILLING CUTTING TOOL DIAMETER THAT MACHINE THE WHOLE SURFACE AS FAR AS A SPECIFIC POINT BE REACHED. THE SAME IDEA OF USING THE GREATEST CUTTING TOOL DIAMETER IS ADOPTED IN THE PSURF4 ALGORITHM, WHICH ALLOWS THE SURFACE TO BE MACHINED IN A SINGLE PASS, DIRECTING THE TOOL IN A PATH EQUIDISTANT OF THE INICIAL SURFACE CONTOUR.
