 Titulo:
REDUCTION OF INTERMEDIATE DENSITY VALUES IN STRUCTURAL TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION

Resumo :
ABSTRACT: ONE OF THE SHORTCOMINGS OF THE STRUCTURAL TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION IS THE APPERANCE OF REGIONS WITH INTERMEDIATE VALUES FOR THE DESIGN VARIABLE AND CHECKERBOARDS. THE EXISTENCE OF THESE AREAS PRESENTS AN OBSTACLE TO THE UNIQUENESS OF THE INTERPRETATION OF THE DESIGN. AMONG THE MANY TECHNIQUES TO DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM ONE CAN LIST PENALTY FACTORS IN THE COST FUNCTION OR THE CONSTITUTIVE EQUATION, AND THE USE OF DIGITAL IMAGING ALGORITHMS TO RESTRICT THE GRADIENT OF THE DESIGN VARIABLE. THIS WORK PRESENTS A TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION APPROACH TO MINIMIZE THE STRUCTURE S VOLUME WHILE CONSTRAINING THE COMPLIANCE, USING A DENSITY APPROACH. A PENALIZED COST FUNCTION IS INTRODUCED TO REDUCE THE INTERMEDIATE DENSITY AREA, AND IT IS SHOWN TO BE EFECTIVE EVEN WITHOUT ANY FILTERING. CHECKERBOADING IS AVOIDED BY USING LOWER ORDER ELEMENTS COMBINED WHITH FILTERING. TWO FILTERING STRATEGIES ARE SHOWN: A GAUSSIAN-LIKE AVERAGING FILTER AND A DIRECT SPATIAL GRADIENT CONSTRAINT. THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED COMPARING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EACH TECHNIQUE AGAINST THE LITERATURE. KEYWORDS OPTIMIZATION, TOPOLOGY, FILTERING, GRADIENT CONTROL
