PARAMETER DETERMINATION FOR A MORE RATIONAL PROCESSING OF GRANITIC ROCKS BY ABRASION

ABSTRACT. BOTH THE COMPLEXITY OF THE MATERIALS STRUCTURE AND OF THE ABRASIVE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE ORNAMENTAL STONE INDUSTRY PRECLUDE A RATIONAL APPROACH TO THE DETERMINATION OF PROCESSING PARAMETERS. IN THE CASE OF CUTTING AND POLISHING OPERATIONS, WEAR OR MATERIAL REMOVAL IS TO BE MAXIMIZED WHILE ENERGY EXPENDITURE AND DAMAGES TO THE PART MUST BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM. CRACK FORMATION IS TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS AND THE DESIRED GLOSS IS TO BE ACHIEVED. THUS, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KNOW THE PETROGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTIC OF EACH KIND OF GRANITE, AS WELL AS THE PROPERTIES THAT MOST INFLUENCE THE ABRASIVE WEAR OF BRITTLE MATERIALS. THIS WORK ATTEMPTS TO RELATE THE PETROGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF FOUR DISTINCT COMMERCIAL GRANITES TO THEIR HARDNESS AND FRACTURE TOUGHNESS AIMING AT UNDERSTANDING THEIR DIFFERENT BEHAVIOR DURING PROCESSING. THE NUMBER OF VARIABLES INVOLVED AND THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ABRASIVE PROCESS SUGGEST THE NEED TO INCORPORATE OTHER MATERIALS PARAMETERS, SUCH AS GRAIN-SIZE AND DISTRIBUTION AND PHASE DISTRIBUTION TO THE ANALYSIS.
