ABSTRACT. THIS WORK INVESTIGATES COMBUSTION WITHOUT FLAME, CALLED SMOLDERING COMBUSTION, IN BIOMASS SMALL LOGS. THE MAIN GOALS WERE: TO CHECK THE PARAMETERS THAT CONTROL THE START AND THE STABILITY OF THE SMOLDERING PROCESS AND TO MEASURE THE CO, CO2 AND O2 CONCENTRATIONS DURING THE BURNING. THE TESTS WERE PERFORMED IN A HEATING TUBE CONNECTED TO A TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER AND WITH THE INSERTION OF CONTROLLED AIR MASS FLOW. THROUGH EXPERIMENTS MADE WITH DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES (250 OC AND 300 OC) AND DIFFERENT AIR OUTFLOWS (42.5 L/MIN. AND 57 L/MIN.), WITH THE SAME TYPE OF WOOD, WHICH WERE IN SIMILAR CONDITIONS OF DRYING AND DIMENSIONS, DIFFERENCES IN BURNING RATES WERE INVESTIGATED. THE O2, CO2 AND CO CONCENTRATIONS VARIED BETWEEN 12 AND 21 %, 0 AND 7 % AND 0 AND 5 %, RESPECTIVELY. THE HIGHER THE TEMPERATURE OF THE FURNACE, THE HIGHER THE EMISSION RATES OF CO AND CO2. THE BURNING OCCURRED FASTER WITH PREHEATED FURNACE AT TEMPERATURE OF 300 OC AND AIR FLOW RATE OF 42.5 L/MIN.
