ABSTRACT. THE APPLICATION OF RELIABILITY CONCEPTS TO MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULL IN REGARDING THIS ACTIVITY AS A SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE, BRINGING EFFECTS SUCH AS SAFETY IMPROVEMENT AND PROFITABILITY IN BUSINESS. IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS PRACTICE SUITABLE, THERE ARE REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SYSTEM ITSELF, ITS OPERATION TARGETS, SUCH AS LEGAL AND SAFETY STATEMENTS, AND THE FAULT PHENOMENON, RELATING IT TO THE EQUIPMENT OPERATION ACCORDING TO THREE CHARACTERISTICS : STACTISTICAL BEHAVIOR, FAILURE MODE AND FAILURE PROPAGATION THROUGH THE SYSTEM, DEFINING THE FUNCTIONABILITY DETERIORATION DUE TO THE FAILURE OCCURRENCE. THESE CHARACTERISTICS ARE HIGHLIGHTED BY THE EMPLOYMENT OF SYSTEMS RELIABILITY ANALYSIS TOOLS, SUCH AS FMEA. THIS PAPER AIMS TO SHOW THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RELIABILITY CONCEPTS APPLICATION TO DEFINE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES, IN ORDER TO ASSURE SAFETY, PROFITABILITY AND TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE DURING A SYSTEM OPERATION, BASED ON AN AERONAUTICAL ACTIVITY EQUIPMENT.
