Resumo :

ABSTRACT. THIS WORK COMPARES THE BEHAVIOR OF THE MOST POPULAR CUTTING FLUIDS CONSIDERING TOOL LIFE, MICROHARDNESS AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF THE WORKPIECE. WHEN DRILLING AISI 8640 STEEL WITH HSS DRILLS (10 MM DIAMETER). A MINERAL SOLUBLE OIL, TWO SYNTHETIC FLUIDS (ALL USED AT 5% AND 10% CONCENTRATION) AND A NEAT MINERAL OIL WERE TESTED. DRY CUT WAS ALSO CARRIED FROM 10 TO 40 M/MIN WITH A CONSTANT FEED RATE OF 0,13 MM/REV. AT THE LOWEST AND HIGHEST CUTTING SPEEDS THE NEAT MINERAL OIL HAS PRESENTED THE BEST RESULTS WHILE AT INTERMEDIATE CUTTING SPEED THE SYNTHETICS SHOWED BETTER EFFICIENCY.
KEY WORDS: CUTTING FLUIDS, DRILLING OPERATION, TOOL LIFE, SURFACE ROUGHNESS, MICROHARDNESS.
