THE INFLUENCE OF COOLING IN THE CUT-OFF OPERATION
Resumo :
THIS PAPER SHOWS A STUDY OF THE ABRASIVE DISC S BEHAVIOR, UNDER SEVERAL CUTTING CONDITIONS, WHEN THE CUT-OFF OPERATION IS DONE WITH AND WITHOUT COOLING. COMPARING THE TWO SITUATIONS, IN CASES THAT COOLING WAS APPLIED, THE VALUES OF G RATIO WERE HIGHER THAN THE ONES OBSERVED IN THE CUTTING OPERATIONS WITHOUT COOLING. THE HIGHEST VALUE OF G RATIO, USING COOLING, WAS OBSERVED WHEN THE CONTACT TIME BETWEEN THE WORKPIECE AND THE ABRASIVE DISC WAS HIGHER. IN THE OTHER HAND, WHEN THE CUTTING PROCESS IS DONE WITHOUT COOLING, LOWERS VALUES OF ROUGHNESS RA WERE OBSERVED, DUE TO THE HIGHER THERMAL DAMAGE THAT OCCURS IN THE ABRASIVE S BOND, CAUSING THE RELEASE OF THE GRAINS. THE NEW SHARPER ONES, WITH UNFLATTED TOP GRAIN AREAS, CAN REMOVE MORE MATERIAL, AND LEAD TO A BETTER SURFACE FINISHING. TO IMPROVE THE DIFFERENCES DETECTED ON THIS RESEARCH, A POWERFULLY COOLING SYSTEM SHOULD BE USED.
