Este trabalho apresenta uma análise sobre a utilização
da nova mídia, que é a Internet, como ferramenta para aumentar a
competitividade das empresas e facilitar a difusão da tecnologia e do
conhecimento nas modernas sociedades organizadas. É apresentada uma breve
história da Internet e sua evolução até o estágio atual, o
desenvolvimento dos equipamentos que facilitaram esta evolução e o
surgimento das comunidades virtuais. Enfatiza-se o uso tecnológico destas
ferramentas para o setor metal mecânico, apresentando-se suas vantagens.
Finalmente introduz-se, como exemplo, o site CIMM, que tem como finalidade
congregar profissionais e instituições ligados a este setor, desencadeando
a consolidação da sua comunidade virtual.

This work focuses the new media Internet, and its use
by virtual communities. The importance of this tool as a mean to improve
enterprise competition is emphasized, as well as its importance in
technology and knowledge diffusion. A brief history of the Internet is
presented, covering its evolution from the beginning to the present, the
development of associated equipment and the birth of virtual communities.
The advantages of the use of the net for the mechanical-metal area are
approached. As the final point, The site CIMM is introduced, which has
the goal of promoting the union of professional and institutions working in
the area, and then consolidating its virtual community.
