Dr. Claudius Feger is currently manager of the Smarter Devices team of IBM Research - Brazil and senior site manager of the Rio site of the Brazil Research Lab. He joined IBM Research at the T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Hts., NY, in 1984 in the area of electronics packaging research, an area which he eventually led for IBM Research. He holds a diploma in chemistry and a doctorate in polymer science from the University of Freiburg, Germany. Before joining IBM he taught polymer chemistry at the Instituto de Quimica, UFRGS, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Polymer Science and Engineering Department of UMass, Amherst.
He is co-author of about 100 research papers covering a wide area of materials study for applications in electronic packaging, opto-electronics, and secure packages. He holds 53 (35 US) patents, wrote 5 book chapters, and edited four books on polyimides. He has been a speaker at many national and international conferences and has been involved with many conferences as plenary speaker, technical program chair or session chairman.
He is a Distinguished Fellow and Past President of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and a member of the Jisso North America Council, the ECTC subcommittee on Assembly and Manufacturing Technology (former chair), the Advisory Board of the Highly Filled Materials Institute of Stevens Inst., NJ, and is a member of IMAPS, IEEE, SPE, SBMicro (Brasil), and the German Chemical Society.
In his spare time he is practicing tai-chi, learning Portuguese, and watching birds. He currently resides with his wife in Rio de Janeiro.
