Cogeneration systems planning is usually based on conventional thermal cycles, that are commercially available; however, advanced generating technologies have been presented in the literature, some of them under construction as prototypes or pilot plants. Recent publications discuss the need of a "taxonomy" for classifying them, as well as for indicating their technical, economic and environmental characteristics to distinguish the technological niches, and so to guide the policies according to the ones that present higher probability of implementation success. This article presents a review about the taxonomy proposals presented in the literature, and identifies the main technological alternatives for a possible future use in cogeneration systems by appointing the ones that present the more attractive indices for the medium and long term utilization. Keywords. Advanced technologies, cogeneration, fuels, taxonomy.
