Abstract. Large-Eddy Simulation using Smagorinsky and dynamic sub-grid scale models was used to numerically analyse the natural convection, in transitional regime, over a heated and horizontal cylinder. Situations governed by high Rayleigh numbers were simulated. The beginning of the transition process was indicated. The results were compared with experimental data. The dynamic sub-grid scale model gives better results, when compared with the Smagorinsky model.
