Summary :

A STUDY OF MAIN PARAMETERS IN A BIOSORPTION OF HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM BY SEAWEED
ABSTRACT. ONE OF THE MAIN ALTERNATIVE PROCESS DEVELOPED TO TREAT HEAVY METALS IN INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENTS HAS BEEN THE BIOSORPTION, WHOSE PRINCIPLE IS BASED ON A POTENTIAL BONDING OF METALLIC IONS TO SEAWEED. IN THIS STUDY, THE REMOVAL CONSISTS IN A SOLID - LIQUID CONTACT PROCESS USING ULVA LACTUCA, A GREEN SEAWEED, AND HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM SOLUTION. A 24 EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN WAS USED TO ANALYZE THE INFLUENCE OF PH, INITIAL HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM CONCENTRATION, TEMPERATURE AND BIOSORBENT MASS ON THE REMOVAL CAPACITY Q. IN ACID SOLUTION (PH=2,0) THE REMOVAL CAPACITY WAS GREATER THEN COMPARED WITH THE REMOVAL CAPACITY IN A BASIC SOLUTION (PH=10,0), HOWEVER THIS DIFFERENCE SHOWS A LITTLE SIGNIFICATIVE WHEN COMPARED WITH THE OTHERS ANALYZED PARAMETERS. IN THIS CASE, THE MAIN TO METAL REMOVAL VARIABLES WERE INITIAL CHROMATE CONCENTRATION AND BIOSORBENT MASS, AND THE TEMPERATURE IS IMPORTANT ONLY WHEN ITS VARIATION CAUSE CHANGES IN A PHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF SEAWEED.
