AL/SIO2 FIBROUS COMPOSITE OBTAINED BY POWDER METALLURGY
Summary :
IT HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN THAT LAST FEW YEARS A CONTINUOUS INCREASE IN THE RESEARCH OF NEW TECHNICS AND PROCESSES FOR THE OBTENTION OF MMC. THESE NEW MATERIALS, WHEN SHOWING MECHANICAL STRENGHT BECOME NEW ALTERNATIVES TOWARDS THE TRADICIONAL METALLURGY, IN THE ENGINEERING SEARCH OF STRENGHT AND LIGHTNESS. THE MAJORITY OF THE COMPOSITES UNDER STUDY ARE METALIC MATRIXES REINFORCED BY DISCRET SECONDARY PHASES, USUALLY HIGH HARDNESS AND STRENGHT CERAMICS, IN THE SHAPE OF PARTICLES OR FIBERS. THIS PAPER SHOWS THE OBTENTION OF METALLIC COMPOSITES WITH FIBROUS REINFORCEMENT INTO AN ALUMINUM MATRIX, DUE TO ITS EXCELLENT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND LIGHT WEIGHT. POWDER METALLURGY TECHNICS WITH COLD UNIAXIAL PRESSING WERE USED; REACTIVE INFILTRATION PROCESS, WHERE THE SILICA IS REDUCED BY THE ALUMINUM, AND HOT EXTRUSION PROCESS. AS REINFORCEMENT ELEMENT, REFRACTORY ALUMINO-SILICATE AND SILICA FIBERS WERE USED. TO EVALUATE THE RESULTS, MECHANICAL AND MICROSCOPICAL TESTS WERE REALIZED.
