ABSTRACT. IN THE LAST DECADES THE SUPERALLOYS RESISTANT TO WEAR AND HIGH TEMPERATURES HAVE HAD LITTLE CHANGE IN THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. RECENT IMPROVEMENTS IN THEIR PERFORMANCE HAVE BEEN OBTAINED THROUGH THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE DEPOSITION PROCESSES. TRADITIONAL WELDING PROCESSES ARE CONVENTIONAL METHODS FOR APPLYING HARD COATINGS. HOWEVER, RECENT TECHNIQUES LIKE PLASMA TRANSFERRED ARC (PTA) AND LASER DEPOSITION TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN INCREASINGLY USED IN THE APPLICATION OF WEAR-RESISTANT COATINGS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO ANALYSE THE EFFECTS OF EXPOSING STELLITE 6 COATINGS DEPOSITED ON 304 STAINLESS STEEL TO HIGH TEMPERATURES AND THERMAL CYCLES (750 șC, 1050 șC AND FIVE CYCLES AT 1050 șC). SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING (SMAW), PTA AND LASER DEPOSITION PROCESSES ARE ANALYZED. THE CHARACTERIZATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURE AND THERMAL CYCLE EFFECTS ON THE MICROSTRUCTURES PRODUCED BY THE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH OPTICAL AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AT AMBIENT AND HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE ANALYZED BY MEANS OF VICKERS MICROHARDNESS.
KEY-WORDS: COBALT-BASED SUPERALLOYS, STELLITE 6, SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING, LASER CLADDING, PLASMA TRANSFERRED ARC.
