ABSTRACT: ADAPTIVE CONTROL BASED ON LMS ALGORITHM HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY USED FOR NOISE AND VIBRATION SUPPRESSION FOR AT LEAST TWO DECADES NOW. BUT THIS AREA IS NOT COMPLETELY EXPLORED AND MANY NEW APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A TORSIONAL VIBRATION CONTROL USING THE LMS ALGORITHM. A MODEL FOLLOWING CONFIGURATION OF A FEED-FORWARD CONTROL IS PRESENTED, WHICH AIM IS TO ATTENUATE THE VIBRATION CAUSED BY A LOAD TORQUE DISTURBANCE IN A ROTATING MACHINE. DESIGN CRITERIA ARE ESTABLISHED BASED ON CONTROLLER PERFORMANCE, DYNAMIC CONVERGENCE AND STEADY ERROR, AS WELL AS THE RELATION BETWEEN THEM AND THE NUMBER OF WEIGHTS TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS. AN EXPERIMENTALLY IDENTIFIED PLANT MODEL IS USED IN A SIMULATION IN ORDER TO STUDY THE CONTROLLER BEHAVIOR. VARIATIONS ON THE PLANT MODEL ARE ADOPTED TO EVALUATE THE ROBUSTNESS OF THE CONTROLLER, AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE DESIGN PARAMETERS. IT CAN BE CONCLUDED THAT THE CONFIGURATION IS FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO BE APPLIED TO TORSIONAL VIBRATION, DESPITE EVENTUAL VARIATION OF THE PLANT PARAMETERS, IF THE ADEQUATE NUMBER OF WEIGHTS IS CORRECTLY ASSUMED.
KEYWORDS: LMS CONTROL, TORSIONAL VIBRATION CONTROL, FEED-FORWARD CONTROL.
