MODELLING OF COUPLED PHENOMENA IN POROUS MEDIA
SUMMARY. THIS WORK PRESENTS A CONSISTENT STRUCTURE FOR THE STUDY OF DIRECT AND COUPLED PHENOMENA BASED ON THE THEORY OF NON-EQUILIBRIUM THERMODYNAMICS. THE PROCEDURE WAS DEVELOPED FOCUSING THE ANALYSIS OF AQUIFERS DECONTAMINATION AND IT RESULTS IN A SET OF PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS FOR THE STATE PARAMETERS OF THE SYSTEM (PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE, ELECTRICAL POTENTIAL AND CONCENTRATIONS OF CHEMICAL SPECIES). THE COUPLED PHENOMENA ARE CORRELATED WITH THE DIRECT PHENOMENA USING DIMENSIONLESS VARIABLES. SUCH PROCEDURE FACILITATES THE ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIVE CONTRIBUTION OF EACH PHENOMENON IN THE RESPECTIVE TRANSPORT EQUATIONS. THE EQUATIONS SYSTEM IS DISCRETIZED VIA THE FINITE DIFFERENCES METHOD AND NUMERICALLY SOLVED BY A FORTRAN CODE ALGORITHM . THE RESULTS PROVIDE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL PHENOMENA INVOLVED IN THE CONTAMINANTS TRANSPORT PROCESSES ASSOCIATED TO THE ELECTROKINETIC REMEDIATION TECHNIQUE AND IT CAN BE USED TO AID IN THE PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT AND APPLICATION OF THE TECHNIQUE.
