ABSTRACT. THIS WORK PRESENTS A NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE MELTING PROCESS, IN PRESENCE OF NATURAL CONVECTION AND DENSITY MAXIMUM, OF A VERTICAL ICE LAYER INSIDE A RECTANGULAR CAVITY WHOSE TWO OPPOSING VERTICAL WALLS ARE DIFFERENTIALLY HEATED AND KEPT ISOTHERMAL. THE HORIZONTAL TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS DRIVE THE FLUID MOTION. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE NON-LINEAR DENSITY VARIATION IN THE BUOYANCY TERM OF THE MOMENTUM CONSERVATION EQUATION AFFECTS THE INTERFACE MOTION, THE FLOW STRUCTURE AND THE HEAT TRANSFER BY NATURAL CONVECTION.
