IN THIS WORK, SHAPE OPTIMIZATION OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURES DESCRIBED
BY NURBS SURFACES IS PRESENTED. THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD IS APPLIED TO
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS. CONTINUOUS DESIGN SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS IS USED TO
EVALUATE GRADIENTS OF PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONALS. THE EXPRESSIONS OF SHAPE
SENSITIVITY DEPEND ON THE DESIGN VELOCITY VECTOR FIELD WHICH DESCRIBES SHAPE
VARIATIONS OF THE DOMAIN. ASPECTS OF BOUNDARY VELOCITY FIELD EVALUATION AND
GEOMETRIC DATA STRUCTURES ARE DISCUSSED. FINALLY, A SHAPE OPTIMIZATION OF A
3D LINEAR ELASTIC EXAMPLE IS PRESENTED.
