HEAT SWITCHES ARE DEVICES WHICH PRESENT VARIABLE OVERALL THERMAL RESISTANCE. SEVERAL RESEARCHERS HAVE BEEN PRESENTED DIFFERENT HEAT SWITCH CONCEPTIONS FOR SATELLITE THERMAL CONTROL APPLICATIONS. THE HEAT SWITCH UNDER STUDY IN THIS WORK, PRESENTS AN OVERALL THERMAL RESISTANCE WHICH IS DEPENDENT OF ITS MEAN TEMPERATURE AND WAS DEVELOPED TO INSULATE THE RADIATION SENSORS FROM THE SATELLITE STRUCTURE. THE WORKING PRINCIPLE OF THE HEAT SWITCH IS BASED ON THE DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL EXPANSION OF TWO DISTINCT METALS. THE DECREASING OF THE HEAT SWITCH MEAN TEMPERATURE CAUSES AN INCREASING OF THE THERMAL CONTACT RESISTANCE BETWEEN TWO COMPONENTS OF THE HEAT SWITCH, DUE TO THE DECREASING OF THE CONTACT PRESSURE. IN THIS WORK, AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY, PERFORMED TO OBTAIN MEASUREMENTS OF THE OVERALL THERMAL RESISTANCE OF THIS HEAT SWITCH IS DESCRIBED. THE DATA WERE OBTAINED UNDER VACUUM AND CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS. THE OBTAINED DATA IS COMPARED WITH THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS, AVAILABLE IN THE LITERATURE. THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS EXPERIMENTAL STUDY, IS TO SHOW THE TECHNICAL VIABILITY OF THIS HEAT SWITCH.
