Summary :

ABSTRACT. A COMPUTATIONAL PROGRAM WAS CREATED FOR DIESEL ENGINES COOLING SYSTEM ANALYSIS. MATHEMATICAL MODELS WERE USED TO DESCRIBE THE HEAT TRANSFER RATE OF THE RADIATOR, THERMOSTAT, FAN DRIVE SYSTEM AND FAN VELOCITIES. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FAN, ENGINE, VISCOUS CLUTCH, HEAT EXCHANGERS AND ENVIRONMENT ARE IMPORTANT VARIABLES IN THE MATHEMATICAL MODELS. COMPUTATIONAL PROGRAM INPUTS ARE TAKEN FROM TESTS AND THE OUTPUTS CALCULATED ARE THE GLOBAL HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT OF THE RADIATOR AND FAN POWER CONSUMPTION DURING THE TEST. COOLING SYSTEM PERFORMANCE MAY BE DETERMINED IN SEVERAL CONDITIONS. THE COMPUTATIONAL PROGRAM CAN BE USED IN COOLING SYSTEM DESIGN OR IN TESTS ANALYSIS. COOLING SYSTEMS OPTIMISATIONS CAN BE OBTAINED USING THE COMPUTATIONAL PROGRAM FOR REDUCING FUEL CONSUMPTION, GAS EMISSIONS AND ENGINE WEAR. SOME GRAPHICAL RESULTS ARE ALSO SHOWED IN THIS PAPER.
KEYWORDS: ENGINE, COOLING SYSTEM, COMPUTATIONAL PROGRAM.
