DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF BIOMATERIALS USED IN ORTHOPEDIC REHABILITATION
Summary :
BIOMATERIALS NOWADAYS EMPLOYED IN ORTHOPEDIC REHABILITATION COVER A BROAD SPECTRUM, INCLUDING THE BIO-LINKS MADE FROM METAL, POLYMER OR CERAMIC MATERIALS AND IN EACH GROUP THE MOST SUITABLE BIOLOGICAL FORMULATIONS TO THE HUMAN BODY CAN BE FOUND. BIOLOGICAL ACCEPTANCE OR REJECTION OF THESE MATERIALS IS USUALLY RELATED TO COMBINED CHARACTERISTICS, SUCH AS TISSUE COMPATIBILITY, ENZYMATIC AND HYDROLYTIC STABILITY AS WELL AS PHYSICAL, ORGANIC AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF EACH MATERIAL IS IMPORTANT. THE SUCCESS OF AN ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANTATION IS LINKED TO THE APPROPRIATE CHOICE OF A MATERIAL THAT SATISFY THE SPECIFIC NEEDS. THE PRESENT WORK IS FOCUSED IN STUDYING THE DYNAMIC PROPERTY OF COMMONLY USED BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS THAT ARE USED IN MAKING ORTHOPEDIC PROSTHESIS. IMPACT TESTS ARE PERFORMED ON SEVERAL SAMPLES IN ORDER TO DETERMINE IMPORTANT PROPERTIES SUCH AS NATURAL FREQUENCIES, MODE SHAPES AND MODAL DAMPING FACTORS. KNOWLEDGE OF THESE PROPERTIES IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT DURING THE DESIGN OF A GIVEN PROSTHESIS.
