ABSTRACT. THIS WORK PRESENTED THE INFLUENCE OF THE APPLIED LOAD AND OF THE SLIDING VELOCITY IN WEAR MECHANISMS OF HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE) AGAINST HOT DIP GALVANIZED STEEL. THE TESTS WERE MADE IN A PIN-ON-DISC TRIBOMETER, IN THE CONFIGURATION OF HDPE PIN AND GALVANIZED STEEL DISC. THE LOADS AND SLIDING VELOCITIES USED WERE: 0,5; 2 AND 20 N AND 0,03; 0,1 AND 1 M/S RESPECTIVELY, BEING DETERMINED FOR EACH TESTS THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT AND THE MASS LOSS. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT WITH THE INCREASE OF THE LOAD AND OF THE VELOCITY, FRICTION COEFFICIENT AND MASS LOS, THEY INCREASE TOO. THIS BEHAVIOR IS ATTRIBUITED TO CHANGES IN THE WEAR MECHANISMS. THE MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATION OF PIN SURFACE REVEALED THAT THREE DIFFERENT WEAR MECHANISMS ACT DURING THE TESTS: ABRASION OF TWO AND THREE BODIES AND THE SUPERFICIAL PLASTIC DEFORMATION, RESULTING IN THE WRINKLED MORPHOLOGY. THE COMBINED ANALYSIS OF THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT AND MASS LOSS, THEY INDICATED A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE WEAR MECHANISMS AND FRICTION COEFFICIENT, BESIDES THE DIRECT INFLUENCE OF THESE MECHANISMS IN WEAR INTENSITY.
