ABSTRACT. THE CONFIGURATION OPTIMIZATION OF TRUSSES, CONSIDERING CROSS SECTION MEMBER AREAS AND NODAL COORDINATES AS DESIGN VARIABLES, USUALLY YIELDS IRREGULAR STRUCTURES WHICH MAY LEADS TO MANUFACTURING DIFFICULTIES. TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM, ADDITIONAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE NODE COORDINATES CAN BE ADOPTED TO IMPOSE ALIGNMENT CONDITIONS ON TRUSS MEMBERS TO SATISFY CONSTRUCTIVE AND TOPOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS. A PROCEDURE TO INCLUDE THESE CONSTRAINTS IS DEVELOPED IN THE PRESENT STUDY. TO THIS PURPOSE, PARAMETRIC VARIABLES ARE INTRODUCED TO BUILD UP NONLINEAR LINKS ON THE NODAL VARIABLES. THIS APPROACH AVOIDS THE USE OF EQUALITY CONSTRAINTS, WHICH COULD CAUSE ILL-CONDITIONING PROBLEMS. SOME APPLICATION TESTS ARE PRESENTED.
