ABSTRACT: A THEORETICAL MODEL, BASED ON THE ISOTHERMAL THEORY OF THE HYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION, IS PRESENTED FOR THE PREDICTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE OPERATIONAL BEHAVIOUR AND OPTIMIZATION OF HYDRODYNAMIC THRUST BEARINGS, AIMING TO OBTAIN THE MINIMAL FRICTION POWER LOSS IN THE BEARING. THIS IS MADE BASED UPON A SELECTIVE PROCEDURE ON THE VARIATION OF THE BEARING GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS, SUCH AS THE PAD TAPER AND SECTOR ANGLE, AS WELL AS THE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF THE LUBRICANT FILM. THE A/B RATIO IS ANALYZED FOR SEVERAL SECTOR ANGLES , THROUGH COMPUTER SIMULATIONS AND FINALLY THE THRUST BEARING IDEAL CONDITION FOR MINIMUM POWER LOSS IS OBTAINED. THE FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD WAS APPLIED TO OBTAIN THE PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION AND THE OPERATIONAL PARAMETERS SUCH AS: LOAD CARRING CAPACITY, LUBRICANT FLOW, POWER LOSS AND TEMPERATURE RISE. TABLES AND GRAPHS ARE PRESENTED, ALLOWING THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF THE BEARING BY THE DESIGNER,EVEN WITHOUT THE USE OF A COMPUTER.
