THIS WORK PRESENTS AN APPLICATION OF A JOINT TIME-FREQUENCY ANALYSIS METHOD, BASED ON THE PSEUDO-WIGNER-VILLE DISTRIBUTION (PWVD). THE METHOD WAS APPLIED TO THE MONITORING OF BALL BEARINGS FAULTS FOR PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE TECHNIQUE DEVELOPMENT. INITIALLY THE VIBRATION SIGNALS, CORRESPONDING TO THEORETICAL MODELS OF FAULTS, ARE INVESTIGATED AND THEN SOME RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED IN AN EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS WITH ARTIFICIALLY INTRODUCED FAULTS IN A TEST BALL BEARING. THE FAULT MATHEMATICAL MODEL WAS VALIDATED IN SITUATIONS WHERE THE ANALYSIS BY USUAL METHODS ARE UNSATISFACTORY. THE CONTOUR MAPS FOR THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL AND TWO FAULT CONDITIONS ARE PRESENTED. THE MAIN ASPECTS OF PWVD METHOD PERFORMANCE ARE DISCUSSED.
