 Title:
AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ATMOSPHERIC RE-ENTRY VEHICLE

Summary :
EARTH RETURNABLE SPACE VEHICLES UNDERGO SEVERAL VELOCITY REGIMES AND FLIGHT CONDITIONS THAT MAY DIFFICULT THEIR AERODYNAMIC DESIGN. CONCERNING A PROPOSAL FOR AN ORBITAL VEHICLE FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL LOW-GRAVITY EXPERIMENTS, WHICH AFTER SATELIZATION REMAINS IN ORBIT FOR THE TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE EXPERIMENTS, BEING LATER CONDUCTED TO EARTH AND RECOVERED AT GROUND, A STUDY HAS BEEN PERFORMED CONSIDERING THE AERODYNAMIC ASPECTS DURING THE BALLISTIC RE-ENTRY FLIGHT. THE VEHICLE S AERODYNAMIC DESIGN, OF GREAT IMPORTANCE FOR THE FLIGHT THROUGH SEVERAL ATMOSPHERE LAYERS HAS TO CONSIDER STABILITY AND DRAG ASPECTS, THE LAST ONE OF MAJOR IMPORTANCE DUE TO HEATING ASPECTS. WITH THE AIM TO OBTAIN THE AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS DURING THE ATMOSPHERIC FLIGHT A CALCULATION PROCEDURE HAS BEEN ADOPTED USING ENGINEERING METHODS. THE PAPER SUMMARISES AND DISCUSSES THE OBTAINED RESULTS FOR DRAG AND STABILITY CHARACTERISTICS DURING THE TYPICAL FLIGHT REGIME FOR AN ATMOSPHERIC RE-ENTRY: HYPERSONICS, SUPERSONICS AND SUBSONIC. KEYWORDS: ORBITAL VEHICLE, ATMOSPHERIC RE-ENTRY, AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS, STATIC STABILITY, DRAG
