TRAVELING WAVE MOTOR
ABSTRACT. RECENTLY, MOTORS THAT USE VIBRATION TO GENERATE DRIVING FORCES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. THE DRIVING FREQUENCY IS IN GENERAL ULTRASONIC RESULTING IN QUIET OPERATION TO HUMAN EAR. THUS, THESE MOTORS ARE KNOWN AS ULTRASONIC MOTORS. THE TRAVELING WAVE MOTOR IS THE MOST PROMISING AMONG THE ULTRASONIC MOTORS. THIS MOTOR PRESENTS SIMPLE CONCEPTION, IS COMPACT, PRODUCES HIGH TORQUE COMPARED WITH ITS MASS AND OPERATES AT SLOW SPEED. THEREFORE DEVELOPMENT OF REMOTE DRIVE SYSTEMS USING ULTRASONIC MOTORS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED INTENSELY. SOME COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS ARE ALREADY EMPLOYED, AS CAN BE SEEN IN AUTO-FOCUS LENS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CAMERAS. THIS WORK PRESENTS THE BASIC OPERATIONAL PRINCIPLE OF A TRAVELING WAVE SONIC MOTOR, AND DESCRIBES THE STEPS OF CONCEPTION, DESIGN, MANUFACTURING AND TESTS.
